People often ask me what the hardest part about being a veterinarian is.

Most think that it is performing euthanasias. Although euthanasias of older, sick pets can certainly be sad, I don’t view them as the worst part of my job because I consider it a gift that we can ease the suffering of a patient and allow them to have a peaceful passing.

For me, the hardest part is seeing backyard breeders put profits over the care of their pets.
I’ve unfortunately seen many breeders refuse basic necessities such as vaccines, heartworm prevention, and standard prenatal care for their pets.

I understand if someone falls on hard times and cannot afford care, but to be intentionally profiting off of your animals, yet deny them basic care, rubs me the wrong way.

I’ve also seen the horrors and consequences of how the breeding of poor genetics affects these pets. It’s heartbreaking seeing bulldogs die of heat stroke from not being able to breathe, or get IVDD at just two years of age.

And the worst is, when these pets get hurt and are not longer able to breed, I’ve seen breeders decline treatment, even if there was a good long-term prognosis, because it will cut into profits.

So to answer @dr.jmack’s prompt, seeing the effects of backyard breeders is the hardest thing to unsee.
