If a city could save you

Out of true. It means not in the correct or exact shape or alignment. and it’s how I've always felt. I hated the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” Because the true answer was “i don’t know” but somehow I knew that wasn’t the correct answer.

I never knew what I wanted to be, but I always knew where I wanted to be. I wanted to be in the cities, with all of the bright lights and people, discovering who I was meant to be. I believed a city could be just as much a calling as the type of work you chose. And since I had no idea what work I wanted to do, I clung to the cities I loved. I was going to live in all of them, I decided - New York, Chicago, London, Paris. I thought - hoped - one of them might save me.

I have since learned it’s not true, of course. A city is a city, and I am still me no matter where I go. Even so, the first time I visited London was the first time my heart ever felt home. I knew I belonged there. London, with its cobblestone streets, row houses and crescents. its love for tea, paddington, music, art. and its constantly rainy weather. London is me, in city form.

I know a city can’t save me. But if one could, I think it would be London.
