Wake Forest University plans to let medical trainees perform painful and invasive procedures on baby vervet monkeys, some as small as two pounds, between August 4-7.

Intubation, urethral tube insertion, and other risky procedures could lead to bleeding, infection, scarring, and even death. This is not standard practice—more than 200 pediatrics programs use human-based simulators, not animals.

Even worse, the NIH has funneled over $12 million in taxpayer funds to maintain this monkey colony, possibly violating federal rules. This flies in the face of the NIH’s own commitment to reducing animal use in research.
