Engaging the nose is probably one of the biggest thing I see the public forgetting to do with their dogs, especially when they are puppies.
It’s understandable because it’s actually very rare to see dog trainers or veterinary behaviorists talking about engaging the nose with a puppy or adult dog.
They seem to be more focused on teaching dogs obedience the human way through eyes and ears.
A puppy’s sense of smell controls 60% of the dogs brain🧠, so disregarding their sense of smell and primarily using eyes and ears is a flawed approach in my humble opinion.
Here, I’m engaging Raffle’s nose, the puppy in the video, and luring him onto the dog bed.By engaging the nose, his eyes look to see where the food is coming from, and then he moves towards the food to get it.
As he is stepping onto the dog bed, I say “place” to tell his ears what that behavior means.
This is called “marking” the behavior.
As soon as he gets on the dog bed and hears, “place,” I give him the beef treat to positively reinforce the action of getting on the bed.
I recommend doing a bunch of repetitions of the approach to the bed before even asking the puppy to actually stay on the bed.
