Haydn's "Philosopher" Symphony (No. 22) is the only work of its kind he wrote that requires two English horns instead of oboes, and the entire piece seems to have been built around their special timbre--from the "metaphysical," question-and-answer themes of the opening Adagio, to the brilliant concluding hunt. Here, at least, is one symphony that has unquestionably earned its nickname.
