This is first Congregational Church of Long Beach in Long Beach, California on the corner of Cedar and 3rd downtown.

Most Sundays one can find people lined up outside the church waiting for the service to end.

That is when the non profit Urban Community Outreach runs a drop in center at the church which serves meals and provides other services.

On most Fridays the non profit DAYSLB runs a grocery program supplying groceries to families in need.

The drop in center guests include many who are not addicts, not suffering from mental illness and not homeless. The DAYSLB program serves families where both the mother and the father have jobs outside the home.

They just don't have enough money to meet their housing needs AND their food needs each month. So they use the drop in center or the grocery program because they are food insecure.

The proposed GOP budget would greatly exacerbate hunger in California and nationwide.

So on May 25, 2025, the Board of Social Justice at First Congregational Church of Long Beach joined the Bread For The World campaign with an Offering of Letters. Bread For The World is a multi denominational organizations that seeks to eliminate hunger.


Congregants and community members signed pre written letters to Senators and Congresspeople letting them know constituents do not support a budget that increases food insecurity.

The campaign garnered over 50 letters. But it's not over!
