(20 Aug 2013) Children in Mexico returned to school this week to discover government-provided textbooks filled with spelling and grammatical mistakes.
The new textbooks are riddled with misspellings, errors of grammar and punctuation, and at least one city located in the wrong state.
The debacle is an embarrassment for a government that is trying to overhaul Mexico's much-criticised education system.
The Education Department acknowledged the errors were only discovered after 235 million textbooks had been printed nationwide.
Officials promised to give teachers a list of the errors - at least 117 found so far - so they could manually correct them.
However, as of Monday, the teacher's union said it had not received such a list.
One parent, Jesus Valtierra, said thorough checks should have been carried out before the books were mass-printed.
"I think they should have set up a commission responsible for checking spelling and grammar so that the books were written correctly," he said.
Meanwhile, on Monday evening, teachers in Mexico City protested against a sweeping education overhaul that will submit them to evaluations and loosen the control held by their union over hiring and firing.
Teachers clashed with riot police during the protests outside the lower house of Congress.
