This video will show the proper way to connect a cable or device under test to your MOHR Test and Measurement CT100 TDR to avoid damage from an electrostatic discharge.
This video also explains the features built into the CT100B that are designed to help prevent damage by briefly shorting the conductor to the shield to help protect sensitive internal electronic components from electrostatic shock.

THIS VIDEO WILL SHOW YOU HOW TO
CONNECT THE CT100 SERIES TDR'S
TO A TEST CABLE OR OTHER DEVICE.

THIS IS TO AVOID POSSIBLE DAMAGE
TO YOUR TDR, AS ELECTRONIC
CIRCUITS INSIDE ARE SUSCEPTIBLE
TO ELECTRICAL SHOCK.

THE TWO MAIN SOURCES OF
ELECTRICAL SHOCK TO YOUR TDR
ARE

CONNECTING TO “LIVE” EQUIPMENT

AND STATIC ELECTRICITY

NEVER TEST “LIVE” CABLES OR
COMPONENTS.

ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT ANY CABLES
OR EQUIPMENT ARE DISCONNECTED
FROM ANY POWER SOURCE AND
ALLOWED TO FULLY DISCHARGE.

THE CT100'S ARE DESIGNED TO TEST
SYSTEMS THAT ARE NOT POWERED.

ANY CABLE OR WIRE CAN CARRY A
SIGNIFICANT STATIC ELECTRIC
CHARGE.

AND THAT STATIC CHARGE COULD
DAMAGE THE SENSITIVE INTERNAL
ELECTRONICS OF THE CT100.

FOR THIS REASON, IT IS ESSENTIAL
TO PROPERLY DISCHARGE THE
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS OF ANY
CABLE, OR DEVICE UNDER TEST.

THIS IS DONE BY SHORTING THE
CONDUCTORS TO EACH OTHER OR TO
EARTH GROUND BEFORE CONNECTION
IS MADE TO YOUR METER.

STANDARD CT100 MODELS ARE
EQUIPED WITH A SELF SHORTING BNC
CONNECTOR.

THIS BRIEFLY SHORTS THE
CONDUCTOR TO THE SHIELD AND
DISSIPATES THE STORED CHARGE

BEFORE COMPLETING THE CONNECTION
TO THE SENSITIVE INTERNAL
SAMPLING CIRCUITRY.

FOR THIS REASON, THE LAST
CONNECTION SHOULD ALWAYS BE MADE
TO THE CT100 TEST PORT.

THIS FEATURE IS TO HELP PROTECT
THE SENSITIVE INTERNALS OF YOUR
METER

AND SHOULD NEVER BE THE
PRIMARY MEANS OF STATIC
DISCHARGE.

EXTRA CARE MUST BE TAKEN WITH
THE CT100HF AS THESE FEATURES
ARE NOT AVAILABLE

STATIC SHOULD ALWAYS BE
DISCHARGED PRIOR TO CONNECTING
TO THE TEST PORT OF ANY HIGH
FREQUENCY TEST EQUIPMENT.

TO RECAP,

ALWAYS BEGIN BY MAKING SURE TO
ELECTRICALLY SHORT THE CABLE

BEFORE CONNECTING IT TO THE
CT100.

IF THE DEVICE UNDER TEST IS A
CABLE ASSEMBLY,

ALL CONNECTIONS SHOULD BE MADE
AND THEN DISCHARGED PRIOR TO
CONNECTING TO THE TEST PORT.

THE LAST CABLE CONNECTION SHOULD
ALWAYS BE MADE TO THE CT100'S
TEST PORT.

WHILE IT MAY SEEM CONVENIENT TO
KEEP A CABLE OR AN ADAPTER ON
THE BNC CONNECTOR,

THIS PRACTICE IS DISCOURAGED AS
IT WILL BYPASS THE PROTECTIVE
FEATURE OF THE UNITS WITH THE
SELF GROUNDING CONNECTION.

SOME INSTRUMENTS ARE EQUIPPED
WITH AN SMA OR OTHER FRONT PANEL
TEST PORT.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT
THESE PORTS DO NOT HAVE
INTERNAL SELF GROUNDING
PROTECTION,

AND SPECIAL CARE NEEDS TO BE
TAKEN, SO THAT ALL CABLES ARE
ALWAYS SHORTED BEFORE CONNECTING
TO THE TEST PORT.
