For decades, Health Surveillance Assistants (HSAs) have been the unsung heroes of Malawi’s healthcare system, bringing life-saving services like immunization, family planning, and basic medical care. Despite their critical role, HSAs have worked without formal recognition from the Medical Council of Malawi. Additionally, the increasing complexity of health challenges in rural communities has often exceeded their basic training, leaving many HSAs unequipped to meet the evolving needs of their patients.

Amref Health Africa Malawi, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and with support from the Pfizer Foundation, has launched a groundbreaking initiative to transform community health. For the first time ever, 497 HSAs have undergone an intensive training program, officially recognized by the Medical Council of Malawi.
