It is truly a new dawn in Bangladesh. After more than two decades, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party has returned to power. The February 12 general elections have reshaped the country’s political future, marking a major turning point in South Asian politics.
Let’s break down everything you need to know.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, popularly known as BNP, has secured a clear majority in parliament. Led by Tarique Rahman, the party crossed the 150 seat mark required to form the government. According to local broadcasters, BNP won around 212 seats, a comfortable and emphatic win. This is the first time since 2001 that BNP has formed the government. After 20 long years out of power, the party has staged a dramatic comeback.
For 60 year old Tarique Rahman, this election is more than just a party victory, it is personal. He returned to Bangladesh last December after 17 years of self exile. Since then, he has been actively campaigning across the country. Rahman also won both constituencies he contested, Dhaka 17 and Bogura 6. With this victory, he is now set to become the next Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Interestingly, instead of celebrations, Rahman asked his supporters to offer prayers. The party announced it will hold a prayer gathering once results are officially confirmed.
This election is historic for several reasons. First, it is the first national vote since the 2024 uprising that ended 15 years of rule by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Second, for the first time in nearly three decades, the Awami League’s famous “boat” symbol did not appear on the ballot. The Awami League was suspended after the collapse of the previous administration. Sheikh Hasina is currently in India after being removed from power. This election also marks the absence of Bangladesh’s two most dominant political figures, Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia. Khaleda Zia passed away last December, making this a completely new political chapter.
The coalition led by Jamaat e Islami Bangladesh, along with the youth focused National Citizen Party, could not match BNP’s numbers. However, the alliance performed better than expected.
Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman stated that his party would not engage in “politics of opposition” just for the sake of it. He promised “positive politics,” signalling acceptance of the results. Meanwhile, Gen Z and youth driven movements that played a role in the uprising appear to have lost momentum in electoral politics.
This election was not only about choosing a government. Voters were also deciding on the July National Charter, a reform proposal introduced during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Around 65 percent of voters supported the charter.
