The documentary film “Castle Hot Springs: Oasis of Time” celebrates the history of Arizona’s first resort. Rooted deep in a landscape that has inspired legends for over a century, the story of Castle Hot Springs is a mix of historical fact and lore. The human history of "taking the waters" of the springs starts with the Yavapai Tribe. As settlers came to the Arizona Territory, all the characters that inhabited the Old West seemed to pass through the Bradshaw Mountains, prospectors, cowboys, and cavalry. It mining magnate Frank Murphy and his brother, the Territorial Governor Nathan Oakes, who saw in the springs the seeds of a new economy based on climate that would help drive the region toward statehood. These pioneers laid the groundwork for Arizona to play host to America’s most elite families during the Gilded Age, including the Rockefellers, Pews, and Vanderbilts. Castle Hot Springs grew into a proper Victorian hotel without forsaking the authenticity of its frontier environment; a landscape so stunning it inspired the "founding father of American cinema” Cecil B. DeMille and fine art painters Maxfield Parrish and Olaf Wieghorst. Over the 20th century Castle Hot Springs became a hideaway for movie stars, tycoons, WWII Veterans, and future President of the United States, John F. Kennedy. As the century aged, so did the hotel. The property fell into disrepair but what is essential has always remained intact. Much like the hot mineral waters that flow without interruption from the earth, the influence this location has on the human spirit has never wavered.
