Описание к видео Doom 2: Struggle: Antaresian Legacy - Map 21: The Overture (UV Max)

Struggle is a 33-map “one man mega WAD” following in the footsteps of skillsaw and various related mappers. I make the “one man mega WAD” distinction here because Struggle is almost a total conversion with how much it adds to the game. It adds new sprites (items, weapons, old enemies), custom monsters, new weapons, new textures, you name it. It also comes with a whole host of extremely addictive MIDIs hand-picked from various games that add so much liveliness to the maps.

As I just said, Struggle follows in the footsteps of many mappers that have come before him, but antares031’s style is unique to him, and a style that I’ve come to really love. He’s easily one of my favorite mappers of all time, and that sentiment was mostly built up over the years as I played Struggle over and over again. His action is always in motion, and combined with the fluid and friendly layouts, you get super fast-paced and addictive levels.

I’ve been meaning to play through Struggle for a while now, so I hope you all enjoy!

====================
The Overture marks the transition into Struggle’s final episode, which is set in a brand new and extremely blue world. If you didn’t like the brief cameos from this blue world in the earlier levels, then you best get used to it now because antares runs with this aesthetic for the rest of the megawad. I, for one, absolutely love the visuals in the last ten maps. They showcase the best of antares’ ability to create these architecturally complex and impressive spaces, while also putting emphasis on lighting and little nuances. If I don’t mention it in every map from now on, just know that the visuals in maps 21-30 are excellent.

Anyway, gameplay-wise this is your typical late megawad back-to-basics level. After the frenzied and intense stretch of maps from 31-20, Antares strips your arsenal down just a little bit (plus a secret Assault Rifle if you can find it), while also continuing to utilize bulkier enemies. Right from the jump you’re met with custom enemies that you could otherwise rampage through, but are forced to get down and dirty with in order to continue forwards. It’s a nice way to remind the player of the danger level of the custom enemies, and the entire enemy roster in general. Almost chiefly among them are the Chaingunner Elites, which continue to be a pain in the ass, and especially so in this episode.

There aren’t many “big” moments or even medium-sized ones to speak of except for the yellow skull key fight. This fight can go very wrong if you didn’t find the Assault Rifle secret, which as we already know, can decimate the Archviles way more consistently than anything else at your disposal in that moment. I suppose another fun moment is when you enter the cerulean temple proper and start scrambling for weapons and resources. Besides these moments, this was a pretty typical Antares level, but one that introduces the new theme well enough.
