OLYMPIA — Well 80, the newest brewhouse in Olympia, has opened for business.
The brewery and restaurant opened Monday and is serving six beers on tap that were brewed using the perpetually flowing artesian well in the back of the building. It is one of 96 artesians wells in downtown Olympia.
Paul Knight, retired brewmaster for the former Olympia Brewery in Tumwater, has been working with Well 80’s head brewer, Paul Pearson, to brew special batches of “Olympia Beer,” including a dark one.
Chris Knudson, and his father, Bob, own and operate the new establishment near Fourth Avenue and Cherry Street, close to Olympia City Hall.
The Knudsons found the artesian well by happenstance while looking for a building to locate the brewhouse. The establishment seats about 200 inside, and features outdoor seating on the sidewalk and alleyway for warmer days ahead.
The interior features high ceilings with wooden beams and an area with metal walls that can slide to shut off a room for private gatherings near the brew vats.
An historic Olympia Beer mural is already mounted on one wall with an enlarged photo of a 1936 beer truck parked in front of Tacoma’s Union Station.
Well 80 Brewhouse is open from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Friday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
