GOYA SKETCHES ON DISPLAY FOR THE FIRST TIEM IN MEXICO
A collection of drawings by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya who lived from 1746 to 1828 have gone on display for the first time in Mexico.
The eighteen pieces belong to a private Mexican collector, who bought them from a Spanish family nearly 30 years ago and have been lent to the San Carlos National Museum for the exhibition.
The etchings on display do not follow a theme or established order but contain a mixture of nocturnal, festive, violent and dreamlike scenes.
Carmen Gaytan Rojo, Director of the San Carlos National Museum, where the exhibition is being held said it was "a moment of celebration and joy" to have the drawings on display.
"We have always seen the more well-known pieces, Goya's 'Caprichos' (the name of a series of 80 prints by Goya) or some other series on war, the disasters of war, however a lot of these aren't really very well-known," she said on Wednesday when members of the media were being shown around the exhibition.
The drawings remained unpublished until after Goya's death, finally being shown by the Spanish Academy of Bellas Artes in 1864.
The exhibition will be open to the public until 13 October.
