We propose Idea Clay, a direct manipulation interface for large language models (LLMs) designed to support non-linear and continuous idea generation. Inspired by the metaphor of clay play, users interact with visual “idea fragments” by merging and splitting them to invoke LLM-driven operations. The objective of this research is to facilitate the iterative and exploratory nature of divergent thinking through metaphor-based manipulations, thereby supporting the generation of creative ideas. A user study with 12 participants provided evidence that the interaction of clay metaphors facilitates intuitive and efficient generation and exploration, thereby promoting the creative process. We discuss how metaphor-based manipulation can promote intuitive and engaging human-AI collaboration in creative tasks.
