Just because you’re under the recommended screening age for colon cancer, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of key warning signs and proactively reducing your risk. Younger individuals continue to get diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer more regularly and colorectal surgeon Dr. Sarah Fox shares her three takeaways regarding awareness, screening and prevention:

1️⃣ Bleeding, even a small amount, should never be ignored and always warrants a doctor’s visit, as it could be a sign of colon cancer.

2️⃣ If you begin experiencing symptoms of colorectal cancer, you should request a colonoscopy, regardless of age.

3️⃣ Plant-based diets rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats and avoiding sugary drinks and alcohol, can help reduce your risk for colon cancer.
