Are you covered for asbestos-related claims ?
Asbestos is what the insurance industry calls a treaty exclusion this means unless it is specifically added to a policy it is excluded! Many Building trades and believe that they are covered for asbestos-related claims when actually they are not they assume that they are covered and it isn't until it's to late they find out. Often this means the owner of the property is left with a huge cleanup bill often in the tens of thousands of dollars if something goes wrong.

Most building inspectors carrying out pre-purchase inspections are not insured for asbestos-related claims either and often exclude asbestos from their reports many are not upfront about this and hide behind disclaimers. Often it is not until you read the report that you find out you need to get an asbestos expert in to inspect this part of the home.
The good news is all you have to do is go to the exclusions section of any insurance policy and it will have asbestos-related claims mentioned.

During the 1980s asbestos cement materials were phased out in favour of asbestos-free products. From 31 December 2003, the total ban on the manufacture, use, reuse, import, transport, storage or sale of all forms of asbestos came into force.
