First Nations Language Keepers Gathering 2021
Originally aired September 22nd, 2021

In light of on-going uncertainties with COVID-19 and due consideration of the concerns being expressed the Saskatchewan Indigenous Cultural Centre (SICC) had decided to move the 2021 First Nations Language Keepers Gathering to a fully online and virtual experience that will took place on Tuesday, September 21 and Wednesday, September 22.

We believe that this is the safest approach for the well-being of our Indigenous language community members. This is especially important for our Elders who are the essential repositories of our languages. We believe that a virtual event makes it possible to enhance the learning opportunities and provide a heightened level of engagement for all language groups. Our intent is to ensure all delegates will be able to fully participate virtually through critical networking and online dialog.

This gathering is a leading Indigenous languages conference that is expected to bring together hundreds of delegates from across Canada and the United States. The theme for this year’s conference is Our Sacred Languages Walk With Us. This year’s gathering will be the fifteenth offering of this important gathering.

Language revitalization and language preservation can be very challenging. First Nations communities face many barriers as they move towards revitalization and preservation. At the gathering, presenters share strategies that promote and protect our languages. Researchers, practitioners, language developers and cultural advocates provide delegates with a broad range of language issues and possible solutions from a variety of perspectives.
