In this step by step precalculus tutorial, we explain how to graph functions expressed as the absolute value of a linear function. We graph:

y = |2x - 4|

y = |-x + 3|

Firstly, we review how to graph the equation of a line, by finding the x-intercept and the y-intercept of the line and connecting the two points. Secondly, we review what the absolute value is, and explain how to graph the absolute value of a linear function (a line) using the graph of the line.

The absolute value is common in precalculus and calculus (e.g., in solving inequalities, differentiation problems, integration problems etc.) and is important to master for high school and college students at all levels in order to answer a wide range of questions on homework, assignments, tests and exams.
