Body language is unique to the person, avoid assumptions and the uniqueness of the other person.

We can get caught up in the idea that particular movements and gestures have an exact meaning. I invite you to think that by assuming a gesture has a single meaning you are 1) making assumptions and 2) removing the uniqueness of the client and their world. If we make assumptions we invite disconnection and a reduction in empathic understanding. Both of which hinder the therapeutic relationship.
