Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, but over 2 million hectares of its incredible tropical rainforests, high-altitude moors and water source areas are under concession to mining companies. One such area under threat is the Intag region in the northwest of the country, where rich farmlands sit side by side with the last remnants of the Chocó Andean cloud forests, containing over 275 endangered and critically endangered species and the source of drinking water for hundreds of communities. Local communities have been resisting mining for decades, and the biggest fight yet is underway: a landmark Rights of Nature legal case to stop a massive copper mine, which was won in 2020 and now is being appealed by the Ecuadorian Government.
