BRUTAL DISPLAY: BLACKJACK ANARCHY1 AGGRESSIVE TYPHOON DISPLAY CUT SHORT W/TECH ISSUE | RAF CONINGSBY

This year's RAF Typhoon display pilot, Flt Lt Matt Brighty callsign 'ANARCHY1', taxis out with ZJ914, nicknamed 'Blackjack'. It is also known as Ted's Typhoon because on the 28th May 2021 at 1005L, Blackjack had her maiden flight and who was flying? Yes, that's right Ladies, Gents and Teddy Bears, out very own Sqn Ldr Ted!

On the 5th July 2023, the Ted Coningsby channel reached a milestone of 21K subscribers. The Typhoon display was our celebration to which sadly, towards the final part of the display, the aircraft suffered a fault. This resulted in the pilot to end the display and take it out into a holding pattern to try to relieve the issue and/or to await clearance to land.

Brighty is ferociously impressive and he really shows off the manoeuvrability of the Eurofighter Typhoon. Brighty said in an interview before the season that he will "keep the display sequence more tight" and aims to keep the sequence in a more compact space. This will possibly mean that high speed passes may not be present in the sequences in order to keep the manoeuvres confound to a tighter space.

RAF Typhoon display pilots are selected from 29 Squadron, which is the OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) at RAF Coningsby. 'Brighty' has also flown with XI(F) Squadron, which is one of two front-line combat ready squadrons at Coningsby.

Brighty had also been involved in a special WWII flypast in honour of Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC. Brighty flew the pilot wings of Wg Cdr Guy Gibson in his Typhoon around Lincoln on the 24th January 2022. Gibson flew most of his operations from Scampton and Coningsby.

The wings were on a uniform that was left at RAF Coningsby aft Wg Cdr Guy Gibson VC was killed in action in 1944. Gibson helped form 617 Squadron (more famously renowned as 'the dam busters') during early 1943 for the specialised and extraordinary perilous pursuit of Op. Chastise, using the 'bouncing bomb' to breach the dams in Germany's Rhur Valley during the nights of the 16th and 17th of May 1943. What an honour for Brighty to fly the very wings of Wg Cdr Gibson in his Typhoon...
