STORYLINE:
A protester died Saturday in Lima, elevating to 58 the number of victims during the almost two months of protests in Peru demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte as well as members of Congress.

The Ombudsman's Office confirmed in the evening on its Twitter account the death of Victor Santisteban Yacsavilca, 55.

Santisteban received a serious head injury while demonstrating against the Boluarte government in the historic center. Another injured person was admitted to an intensive care unit.

A group of protesters gathered outside the hospital Grau Emergency Hospital, where Santisteban was taken, and some lit candles.

Police attempted to remove the protesters outside the hospital, and a scruffle broke out.

Protests have multiplied in Peru since Boluarte assumed the presidency on December 7 following the ouster of then-President Pedro Castillo, Peru’s first leader from a rural Andean background.

Castillo tried to short-circuit the third impeachment proceeding of his young administration by ordering Congress dissolved on Dec. 7.

Lawmakers impeached him instead, the national police arrested him before he could find sanctuary and Boluarte, who was his vice president, was sworn in.

The demonstrators demand the resignation of Boluarte and the members of Congress, the convocation of a constituent assembly, an early election, and justice for those who died during the protests.

Other demonstrators demand the freedom and reinstatement of Castillo to the presidency.
