Childebert II (c. 570–March 596) was a Merovingian king who ruled Austrasia from 575 and Burgundy from 592 until his death. He was the son of King Sigebert I and Queen Brunhilda, two central figures in the turbulent politics of the Frankish kingdoms.

After his father was assassinated in 575 by agents of Fredegund, Childebert, then only five, was rescued by loyal followers and proclaimed king in Metz. His mother, Brunhilda, acted as regent during his minority and wielded great political influence, which often brought her into conflict with the Austrasian nobility. Their relationship was one of both affection and tension—Brunhilda’s powerful presence protected Childebert’s throne but also overshadowed his authority.


Childebert was adopted twice by two uncles: first by King Guntram of Burgundy, who eventually made him his heir, and briefly by King Chilperic I, who sought to control him politically. Through these adoptions, Childebert became a pawn and later a key player in the complex family alliances and betrayals that defined Merovingian politics.


Over the years, Brunhilda guided much of his policy, particularly alliances with the Eastern Romans (Byzantines) against the Lombards in Italy. However, their close relationship caused friction with the Austrasian elite, who disliked her assertive rule. After Guntram’s death in 592, Childebert inherited Burgundy and consolidated a vast realm, but his ambitions soon provoked the enmity of his cousins, especially Clotaire II, Fredegund’s son.


Childebert died in 596—according to Gregory of Tours and later sources, likely poisoned together with his wife Faileuba. His early death left the kingdom divided again between his two young sons: Theudebert II (Austrasia) and Theuderich II (Burgundy), whose later rivalry—encouraged by Brunhilda—would echo the same destructive family conflicts that had marked Childebert’s life.


In essence, Childebert II’s life and rule were shaped by family chaos: inherited feuds, maternal domination, and betrayal. His reign stands as a powerful example of how dynastic loyalties and personal ambition intertwined during the volatile Merovingian age.
