1:33 minute video. According to Jeff Goldsmith, PhD, of Health Futures Inc., the problem with U.S. healthcare is not that costs are growing too fast. Instead, we have a crisis of affordability: a declining number of Americans can afford to use the healthcare system. Until January 2014, Americans without health insurance totaled 48 million. Another 35–40 million Americans have insurance but can’t afford to use it. Those on Medicaid total 53 million. Adding these three figures shows that almost half of the U.S. population cannot afford healthcare without massive public subsidies. As result, the healthcare system will need to significantly reduce the cost of care and find ways of avoiding unnecessary care.
