“Chameleos” is an Elder Dragon introduced in Monster Hunter 2, renowned for its mastery of stealth and misdirection. Covered in a blend of purple and pale white hide, this elusive wyvern possesses an elongated head crowned by a curved nasal horn. Its bulbous, rotating eyes grant it independent vision on either side, a trait shared with real-life chameleons. Its most peculiar feature, however, is its long, elastic tongue, capable of lashing out to snatch items directly from a hunter’s pouch—even at considerable distances. Faint leaf-like shapes define its curled tail, which can be severed to weaken its stealth capabilities.

This monster thrives within the cover of mist. Chameleos can generate thick, obscuring fog with its breath, reducing visibility and cloaking its movements. Thanks to its unique physiology, it refracts light across its electrically charged skin, becoming effectively invisible while shrouded. This vanishing act is disrupted when either its horn is broken or its tail is removed, forcing it into direct confrontation. Its attacks rely heavily on status effects: poison breath, acidic spit that reduces defense, and fatigue-inducing clouds that lower stamina. Defensive skills like Anti-Theft are critical to avoid constant item loss from its grasping tongue.

Despite its mischievous aggression, Chameleos is known to be skittish and erratic. Its jittery movements and unpredictable strikes make it difficult to track in combat, particularly when cloaked. It favors confusion and trickery over brute strength, using every opportunity to hinder or disorient its foe before slinking back into the mist. On rare occasions, Chameleos may ignore threats entirely, opting to avoid confrontation rather than fight.

Unlike its contemporaries Kushala Daora and Teostra, which received alternate forms early in the series, Chameleos remained without a variant until Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, where the introduction of Risen Chameleos finally gave it a long-overdue counterpart.
