This week in Counseling Corner, Katie Cooley, M.A., LMHC, a therapist at Crosswinds Counseling, talks Christmas traditions as they relate to the 5 love languages.

Love Language 1: Words Of Affirmation
The first love language Katie talks about is the language of Words of Affirmation. We all know that ideally we could always tell people what they mean to us in person, but sometimes it's great to send a card or text. Texting has become a great way to tell people how we feel about them. Virtual cards are a great option as well.

Love Language 2: Quality Time
Quality Time is a great way that many people express love this time of year. This year think about how we can think about quality time differently. Perhaps even creating new traditions or inviting new people into existing traditions.

Love Language 3: Gifts
Gifts can be a very exciting part of Christmas. However, finding a way to add meaning to gifts can be a powerful way to celebrate. People can buy gifts together. They can give gifts together. Gifts can even be homemade.

Love Language 4: Acts Of Services
Fourth is Acts of Service. Katie suggests baking cookies together and giving them away. Again we can consider creating new traditions or inviting new people into existing traditions. Doing a family outing together can also be a wonderful way to include everyone in an act of service.

Love Language 5: Physical Touch
And then lastly Physical Touch. It's possible that during the year a lot of people you know aren’t getting physical touch due to Covid 19 and everything else going on, and so it could be really meaningful to give that person a hug or a warm pat to say how much they mean to you and give them the feeling of love and togetherness during the holiday. Don’t underestimate the power of a hug.
