Charles Schmid was a serial killer active in Tucson, Arizona in the 1960s. He was known for murdering teenaged girls whom he attracted with his braggadocious image (though he was many years older than them). He styled himself after Elvis Presley, wore layers of face makeup, dyed his hair black, and painted a fake mole on his face. Eventually, he was brought to justice after a friend, fearful his girlfriend would be Schmid's next target, turned him over to the police. He was sentenced to death, though the sentence was commuted to life in prison, where he was stabbed to death. Joyce Carol Oates immortalized him in the short story "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?" which features Arnold Friend, a devilish character based on Schmid.
