Описание к видео TPS Project Hope Brings Urgent Intimate Partner Violence Awareness to Newcomers

More than 100 newcomers gathered at the Ismaili Centre Toronto for an important community session on intimate partner violence, supported by Toronto Police Service through Project Hope. Led by Constable Detective Mustafa Popalzai and Sergeant Farzad Ghotbi—both former neighbourhood officers in Regent Park—the initiative aimed to help newcomers recognize warning signs, understand their rights, and access safety resources.
Staff Sergeant Mike DeSilva served as MC, guiding the event through a series of presentations from police experts and community organizations. Representatives from COSTI Immigrant Services, Poly Cultural Immigrant and Community Services, and Scott McKean, director of Community Safety and Well-Being for the City of Toronto, highlighted the essential role of community partnerships in supporting vulnerable residents.
Superintendent Anthony Pallotta underscored the police service’s commitment to education and prevention, emphasizing that intimate partner violence has been declared an epidemic in Toronto. Detective Shane Miller from the Sex Crimes Unit offered a detailed breakdown of the different forms of abuse—from physical violence to coercive control—and explained how survivors and supporters can seek help safely. Inspector Roger Caracciolo, Toronto Police’s subject matter expert on intimate partner violence, provided additional insight throughout the session.
A Q&A closed the event, giving attendees space to ask questions directly to frontline experts.
Intimate partner violence impacts families in Regent Park, the Downtown East, and across Toronto, making sessions like this vital. For many newcomers, understanding safety and support systems is a challenge, and Project Hope helps bridge that gap. This event strengthened community awareness and reinforced the shared work of building safer neighbourhoods citywide.
