"Over 80% of the Thai population has access to banking services. The gap we have is on the credit side, particularly to the SMEs. We have about 2.7 million SMEs, and only 700,000 have access to the bank credit. But, again, the 2.7 million SMEs, to me, is an underestimated figure because a lot of SMEs are doing businesses under individual names. We call them own-operators. So if we include that part it could be another 2 million customers. This is obviously quite challenging. How would you provide credit to them when they don’t have the financial record-keeping? So it gets back to what you mentioned: use other type of information to assess the credit-worthiness."
