Jetavanaramaya, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is one of the most significant and awe-inspiring monuments of the island’s Buddhist heritage. Constructed by King Mahasena (273–301 CE) and completed by his son Kithsirimevan, this colossal stupa originally stood at 122 meters (400 feet), making it the tallest stupa in the ancient world and the third tallest structure globally at the time, surpassed only by the Great Pyramids of Egypt.

Built using approximately 93 million baked bricks, Jetavanaramaya is not only a marvel of ancient engineering but also a symbol of religious devotion. The stupa is believed to enshrine a relic of the Buddha—a part of his sash or belt—making it a revered pilgrimage site. The surrounding monastic complex once accommodated around 10,000 monks, reflecting the site's historical significance as a major center for Buddhist learning and practice.

Today, Jetavanaramaya stands at 71 meters (233 feet) due to restoration efforts, yet it remains the largest stupa in Sri Lanka by volume. Its enduring presence continues to captivate visitors, offering a glimpse into the island's rich spiritual and architectural legacy.
