An armed robber charged into a Seattle grocery store holding what looked like a real pistol straight out in front of her, but a security officer was able to thwart the robbery and take down the suspect without anyone getting hurt.

The robbery suspect headed to the customer service desk at the front of the store just before 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 22, and ended up pointing the gun at three different people, according to court documents.

“She was pointing at the cashier initially and I said, 'Hey what are you doing!' And then she points it at me,” said Joshua Shuemake, who was working as an armed security detail at the Whole Foods.

Shuemake made a critical observation as he stared down the barrel of the gun. From his training in the military and later in law enforcement, Shuemake realized the firearm didn’t have a way to fire.

"We were just sitting down watching TV and we heard like shots go off, and I’m like that doesn’t sound like fireworks," Nickolas Black-Card, who lives in the area, said, "We saw all the sirens come by and heard all the cops fly by."

Another neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous shared they saw the victim talking to someone in a gray car in the moments leading up to the shooting.

The man was identified by family members Tuesday as Pedro Balderas of Tacoma.

4:45 A man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly shooting another man directly in front of a Seattle police officer.

“I initially thought [the suspect] was in crisis and began slowly driving his direction to tell him to move out of the road. As I began getting closer, I noticed [suspect] was clutching something in his hand and arguing with someone. I saw [suspect] step toward two individuals and point what appeared to be a gun in the direction of the subjects and left off one single shot,” the Seattle police officer wrote in an arrest report.

The officer called for backup and confronted the suspect who then threw his gun into a nearby car and ran away, the report states.
