Your stock holdings are hold by a depository which is linked to your PAN and not by broker, so if anyday broker runs away then all your stock holdings will be safe only the amount you had in the brokers wallet will be lost. I personally prefer only 1 demat for investing if you are into trading also then you can consider having a different demat account for it.
SEBI has made Indian financial markets the world leader in terms of safety and security for retailers. Brokers don’t hold any securities with them. They’re held by CDSL, NSDL which are owned by BSE and NSE respectively and regulated by SEBI directly.
Broker also can’t really run away with lot of money nowadays due to SEBIs rule that’s makes it mandatory for them to refund unused funds from broker account to client bank every quarter for active accounts.
