Misfortune Favors the Bold (@misfortunefilm2024) is a Wild West drama short by Ethan Dwelley (@ethan_dwelley), set in 1880s Montana. It follows Abigail, who, after losing her brother in a snowstorm as a child, embarks on an unexpected journey of redemption and adventure.

This was my first time scoring a full Wild West-style short film, and it was such a fun experience collabing with @ethan_dwelley and diving into this outdoorsy palette of orchestra, vocals, distorted harmonia and flute, drums, out-of-tune piano, and guitar! 🤠

About the Score
We start with a solo guitar piece performed by @pietroruscigno as the grandfather begins retelling the story. As Abigail’s brother is getting lost in a snowstorm, I stretch out and distort flute trills and harmonica to give it an ominous and ethereal sound.

As Abigail goes on a trek to hunt for someone wanted, I create a slow, brooding atmosphere with moody strings to build tension and anticipation. The low strings are layered with guitarrón (Mariachi bass guitar) to bring us further into this western. This breaks into an orchestra chase and standoff sequence.

My favorite track is “Honoring Family / End Credits” since it’s the culmination of the film as Abigail mourns her brother and it allowed me to write a more melancholy piece that also embodies the vast expanse of the mountainous/forest landscape. To make it more sorrowful, I wrote a solo cello melody that soared above everyone in the orchestra, even the violins, since higher notes on the cello to me evoke a more strained, expressive, poignant sound.
