My boss commissioned me to paint a portrait of his little boy.

I started by buying a cheap 18" X 24" canvas for $10 at Wal Mart. I think they are $12.95 now, though. I then bought some gesso from Hobby Lobby. Download the app and you get 40% off every week!
I found that a quick slather of gesso helps the contact paper (or frisket, if you're rich), stick to the surface.
Next, I use a projector to--um... project the image onto the canvas. That's right! We ALL do it. Well, most of us use a projector, grid method, or some kind of technique to get the proportions right. There is nothing wrong with that. It's just another tool.
Anyway, for the projector, you can use anything by Artograph. DON'T USE A DIGITAL PROJECTOR. They suck for our purposes.
