Four entangled seals in a single rescue patrol is devastating enough, but what really took our breath away was the massive rope strangling one of them. Two of the rescued animals were caught in identical loops of this thick, heavy rope, likely discarded from a nearby vessel or fishing operation. One young seal was dragging several meters of it through the sand and the water.
We can’t begin to imagine how he managed to dive, swim, or hunt with that kind of weight pulling him back. Every breath, every meal, every escape attempt must have cost him ten times more energy than any healthy seal. With no hands and no way to reverse out of the knot, he had zero chance of freeing himself. Ocean rubbish like this doesn’t just pollute, it paralyses and kills.
