That's right, you read the title correctly - we are going to show you a moth that actually spits poison from behind its head. Butterflies and moths are typically known as delicate and helpless creatures that die if you touch their wings and remove their scales. Well, that is just an untrue rumor and in fact, some butterflies and moths have some incredible defense mechanisms. Some are strong, fast fliers and remain elusive by flying in canopy tops. Others have false eye spots on their wings that are designed to scare away predators. Others have incredibly camouflaged wings and blend into their environments.

The faithful beauty moth - Composia fidelissima, is a day flying moth that not only is toxic if eaten but this species takes it a step further and actually will spit toxic poisonous froth from a gland on its thorax right behind its head. This species lives in the tropical hardwood hammocks and pine docklands of South Florida and the Florida Keys and is the Keys Moths mascot.
