Water, the fluid of life, is undoubtedly the most important factor for any plant or animal life. As the scarcity of the precious liquid hits the roof, things get beyond the level of chaotic circumstances. Drought is considered by many to be the most complex but least understood of all natural hazards, affecting more lives than any other. Agriculture is usually the first economic sector to
be affected by drought because soil moisture content is often quickly depleted, especially if the period of moisture deficiency is associated with high temperatures and windy conditions.

Hopefully, we can overcome all those odds by using simple and effective techniques, which not only helps in preserving the rainwater but also reduces the loss of water due to evaporation. A good pumping system can be used to irrigate every coconut tree on daily basis with 50 liters of water. In dry times, conserving water with proper water management techniques resume importance of magnanimous proportions. As a farmer who faces drought-related difficulties, Murugesan says, “I have 5 acres of coconut farm. Water is more important to the trees more than any other factors. They need 70-80 liters of water per day. But we are not able to give that, at least in this season. We are only able to give an average of 20-30 liters per day, due to the circumstances.”

In order to conserve water, follow some simple methods. Place dry coconut husks or leaves within a 5 feet radius under the tree, which will reduce the dehydration effects on soil due to evaporation. Apply coir pit around the tree, at a height of 25 centimeters by using approximately 25 kilos per tree. Also, apply 1 kilogram of Potassium chloride per coconut tree during the drought. As Murugesan shares his experience, “By using these simple methods, we can save the trees which would dry within 2 days and make them live up to
15 days.”
