More than one million medical workers in India took to the streets on Saturday as part of a 24-hour strike, ignited by the anger over the rape and murder of a female doctor last week at a medical college in Kolkata.

The 31-year-old victim was a trainee doctor, and according to her father, went missing for at least seven hours without query from other staff.

“My daughter is gone, but millions of sons and daughters are now with me,” the victim’s father told reporters.

Protests have erupted across the country since the tragic incident. Demonstrators are calling for the better protection of women in the country, and one lawyer – who worked on a similar case in 2002 – says widespread judicial changes are needed in order to combat sexual assault in India.

“Each such crime should become a landmark signalling to the society: do not commit such crimes,” Shobha Gupta said. “When we want a system of law to play a role of deterrence, punishment to play a role of deterrence, it should come faster. The punishment should be the harshest possible.”
