AUSTRALIA -- The chick entrusted to the care of Sydney's same-sex penguin couple learns how to swim!

The Sub-Antarctic Gentoo chick, nicknamed Sphengic, after its foster parents Magic and Sphen, has begun its first aquatic lessons at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium.

 The chick hatched in October last year and made headlines around the world for being the first chick fostered to a same-sex couple.

 The two male penguins, Magic and Sphen, bonded ahead of the 2018 breeding season.

 When staff noticed the pair collecting ice pebbles for a nest of their own, they gave them a dummy egg to test out the couple's nurturing skills.

 After a successful trial, the couple was entrusted with a real one.

 The aquarium staff had selected the egg from another couple who had laid two during the breeding season.

 The chick's blood has been sent out for testing, the aquarium will announce the chick's sex and its name in the next few weeks.
