One popular tale from the Sámi people, the indigenous people of Finland, is that the lights are caused by a fox running across the Arctic tundra. As the fox's tail sweeps the snow, it sends sparks into the sky, creating the auroras. This is why the Northern Lights are sometimes referred to as "revontulet" in Finnish, which translates to "fox fires."

Another tale suggests that the auroras are the spirits of ancestors playing in the sky, or that they are reflections of the souls of the departed. These stories have been passed down through generations and add a mystical dimension to the scientific phenomenon.
