TAVI is an abbreviation for transcatheter aortic valve implantation. It is a minimally invasive method of treating aortic heart defects, especially in elderly people who have contraindications to open surgery.

The operation is performed under anaesthesia or local anaesthesia on a working heart without a heart-lung machine.

The TAVI method was originally used for patients who could not undergo surgery because of the risk of not being able to tolerate open surgery. We now use this method on all patients over the age of 70 who have required valve replacement due to advanced dysfunction.

So there is no such thing as a patient with aortic valve stenosis who is inoperable because of age risks with the TAVI procedure.
