Harold Brown watched his P-51 Mustang spiral toward the snow-covered field below, trailing smoke and debris. Only moments earlier, he'd been celebrating with his squadron mates as they decimated German WW2 supply trains: "I had that locomotive lit up like a Christmas tree."
Now, he hung suspended from his parachute, floating down into enemy territory.

As his boots touched the frozen ground, Brown found himself surrounded by German soldiers on skis, rifles trained on him. Behind them, a crowd of locals emerged, intent on revenge.

"Here I come along as one of the pilots," Brown would later recall: "They wanted a piece of me."

But as the crowd closed in, those in front suddenly froze, their expressions transforming from rage to shock. "Impossible," someone whispered. "So the rumors are true."

The pilot standing before them wasn't what they expected— he wasn't who they expected at all…
