Do you have to sign a summons? Do you have to sign a traffic ticket? Traffic and criminal defense lawyer Luke Nichols explains that in Virginia, you are not required to sign a court summons but you should sign it anyways.

If you refuse to sign a traffic summons or any other summons, the police officer can handcuff you and take you to the jail where you will meet with a magistrate to determine whether or not you should be released pending your trial. You may be forced to post bail and refusing to sign a summons does not help you or your case. In fact, it can often hurt your case by making the judge and officer think you are a trouble maker.
