Under-18s will no longer be allowed to buy vapes under new Government plans to crack down on the sale of e-cigarettes.

Plans to be brought to Cabinet this morning [tues] by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly would also see vapes banned from vending machines.

A "vape," or electronic cigarette, is a device that heats up a liquid to create a vapour that is inhaled.

They have become increasingly popular amongst younger people who are now opting to use vapes rather than smoke cigarettes.

The proposed legislation includes a number of measures, including banning the sale of nicotine-inhaling products to those aged under 18.

The Government is now planning to restrict the types of retailers that can sell these products.

The Programme for Government commits to prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes from temporary or moveable premises, at places or events for children and from vending machines.

The new legislation will also curb the advertising of vapes near schools and other settings frequented by children and teenagers.

The ban on advertisements will also extend to public transport in a bid to limit children’s exposure to commercial messages that could be seen to ‘normalise or glamourise’ the purchase and usage of e-cigarettes and vapes, Government sources told the Irish Mirror.

If Minister Donnelly receives Cabinet approval today [tues], the legislation could be introduced in the Oireachtas early next year.

According to the World Health Organisation, there are 16,000 different flavours of vapes, such as bubblegum and gummy bears.

As they grow in popularity, concerns have emerged that vapes serve as a gateway to smoking for young people.

An evidence review by the Health Research Board found that children who vaped were five times more likely to start smoking.

The Cabinet memo from Minister Donnelly is the Government’s latest attempt to crack down on vaping.

Minister of State Ossian Smyth previously announced a public consultation would be held looking to ban disposable vape products.

He branded them “wasteful” as he stated that they are “making the world a worse place”.
