• The notification is unread.
• The messenger reminders are turned on.
• The messenger app cache files are corrupted.

Here are the possible solutions to try:
Mark the notification as read.
• Navigate to your messenger app and open the message.
• Tap and hold the notification messege till it produces some options.
• Tap the ‘mark as read’ button to see if it solves the problem.

Turn off the messenger reminders.
• Access and start your messenger app.
• Click on the 'three horizontal' menu lines in the top left of the app home screen.
• Next, select the 'settings' option from the listed options.
• Navigate to the 'Notification and sound' settings and then to the "Messenger reminders'.
• Turn the messenger reminders off.

Clear the cache
• On your phone's app drawer, access the messenger app icon.
• Tap and hold the app icon.
• Select ‘app info’ from the displayed options.
• Next, select the ‘storage’ option and clear the cache files.
• Please note that clearing works only on Android phones. iPhone users will have to uninstall and reinstall the Messenger app.
