This modern-day canzon by contemporary composer Josef Mons was perhaps inspired by the Northern Italian masters of the Late Renaissance and Early Baroque periods. One might be reminded of the whimsical keyboard capriccii of Girolamo Frescobaldi or the virtuosic sonate of Dario Castello. The Canzon Prima (#1) is one of several in his collection "Josef Mons: Vocal and Instrumental Ensemble Music for Sacred and Secular Occasions." Mons intended the work to be performed by a solo instrument and basso continuo. In this instance, I digitally rendered it from a raw MIDI file by Mr. Mons to simulate the sounds of a Baroque alto recorder with extended range, a double harp (arpa doppia) and a bass dulcian. I communicated directly with Mr. Mons to clarify his particular preferences regarding tempi, articulations and transitions. I added very little to the "performance" other than the sound patches. The public domain video clip was made by Hans-Georg Lepkojis and uploaded to Pixabay.com . Even the video theme was suggested by Mr. Mons who asked if I could find "snowscapes."

Despite its short length, this canzon is divided into 3 movements:

Allegro - Affetti - Vivace.

Like the keyboard works of Frescobaldi, there is no actual "break" between the 3 movements. The fast and slow segments are supposed to flow into one another unlike Late Baroque sonatas in which each movement is distinct and independent.
