Toyota Rumion 1.5TX Test Review

The partnership between Toyota and Suzuki has certainly proven to be a runaway success so far in SA with the launches of the Starlet and Urban Cruiser.

As the 3rd model in this program, Toyota recently launched the Rumion as the replacement for the ageing Avanza 7 seater model in the range. Using the proven Suzuki Ertiga and placing Toyota badges and some interior changes this quickly provides Toyota with a much more modern and efficient budget 7 seater.

Toyota's choice of Suzuki for this partnership was obviously motivated by the proven Suzuki platforms and powertrains that are reliable and economical. These are both crucial in this market sector.

The 1.5L 4 cylinder motor provides 77kW and 138Nm to the front wheels through a 5 speed manual transmission. A 4 speed automatic is also available. Obviously, a vehicle of this type is not meant to be a ball of fire but performance is always more than adequate and I noted that the Rumion was extremely quiet when cruising at freeway speeds even with revs around 3500rpm.

Fuel economy of 7.2l/100km for the test period that included a lot of urban driving plus our standard cruise to Hartebeespoort is excellent for this size and type of vehicle although we did not travel with more than 2 occupants during the test.

As the top spec version, the TX includes air-conditioning including vents for the rear compartment, 8" touchscreen with Apple Carplay and Android Auto, 17" alloy wheels and faux wood trim (which I really didn't like).

Versatility is one of the biggest advantages of this type of vehicle. You have 7 seats if you need them but, when in 5 seater mode you have massive boot space. This reminded me of station wagons of the past, ensuring that this could be a great vehicle for the family holiday trip.

Overall, Toyota have taken a proven segment leader and added the advantages of Toyota ownership to the proposition. Like the Starlet and Urban Cruiser it's guaranteed to be another sales success.

With prices from R245 600 to R301 600 with all versions having the same powertrain but differing specification levels, the choice is yours if it's for basic transport or family fun.
