Welcome to our video discussing the biggest box office bombs of 2023. From wacky comedies to big-budget flops, we're diving into the worst movies of the year and what made them such massive failures at the box office. Get ready for an eye-opening look at the biggest flops of 2023 and why they just couldn't make it to the top. But don't worry, we've got you covered with all the details on these disasters so you can avoid wasting your time and money on them. So buckle up and join us as we uncover the truth behind these box office bombs!
First up on the list we have the Disney feature The Haunted Mansion. The film starred Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito and is based on the classic ride in Walt Disney World. They tried making a movie about this ride back in 2003 with Eddie Murphy but it was panned by the audience and critics alike.
Next up we have The Machine, starring Mark Hamill and Bert Kreisher. For those not familiar, Bert Kreisher is a comedian and entertainer who gained stardom through his crazy stand-up antics and podcast appearances. His most popular bit involves his retelling of a story where Bert found himself face-to-face with Russian gangsters on a college trip to Russia way back in the day.
Next up in line, we have Shazam! Fury of the Gods. As the 2nd installment of the Shazam series, the studio was confident and hopeful that this one would blow out the box office. But as the time came close for its release, many were weary how the movie would be and how well it would perform considering all the other movies coming out at that time. Alongside Zachary Levi, the film starred some big names like Helen Mirren and Rachel Zegler among others. On its release, Shazam 2 ended up being the third worst DC film release (behind The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984)
Next we have a very sad exit for an iconic character but not in the way you are thinking. Yes, we’re talking about Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. As the final movie in the beloved franchise, they absolutely butchered Indy’s exit. Not only was Dial of Destiny a financial failure for Disney but the movie absolutely trashed everything that made the original character great. With overdone gimmicks, cliches, and a constant reminder that Indiana Jones is old and useless, Dial of Destiny failed in so many ways. Glad Pheobe Waller Bridge’s pretentious character who’s good at everything was able to help our senior citizen hero leave the big screen with a disappointing whimper. Harrison Ford must be mad.
Following the trend of disappointing superhero movies, we have the strange case of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. What was supposed to be a fun and surreal journey ended up being a disappointment. Besides Jonathan Majors's sinister performance as Kang the Conqueror, the movie was strangely paced, poorly made in some parts, and criticized for its lacklust of graphics and storytelling, just look at this, what in gods name were they thinking?
Next up we have Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. As one of the most surprising movies of 2023, the movie was actually met with really favorable reviews from the audience and critics alike. It was a fun and unique movie that set out to do something a little different from the norm and ultimately succeeded. Backed up with names like Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, and others, D&D was a critical surprise. But sadly, the same wasn’t the case in getting people to come out and see the movie on the big screen.
Now back to our regularly scheduled program featuring Disney’s downfall, we have the 2023 animated movie WISH. If I told you this was the same studio that made movies like Encanto, Zootopia, and Alice in Wonderland you’d probably laugh at me. Apart from their regular animation style, Wish involves a flat and boring concept art style matched with nostalgia bait that many audience members and critics failed to resonate with, and for good reason.
Next up we have one of the highest-grossing films of the year which Mission Impossible; Dead Reckoning Part 1. Off the back of Top Gun and the previous MI films, Dead Reckoning was anticipated to be another big win.
In an awkward twist of fate, the buzz surrounding the new Flash was riddled with actor Ezra Miller’s controversial actions outside of the big screen. Warner Brothers was placed in an unfavorable position from the get go.
The Marvels starring Brie Larson. Not sure what the demographic for this one was or who asked for it, but it is no surprise that this movie failed utterly in getting people to come out to the theaters.
