This is chapter 2 of NCERT Social and Political Life II Class 7 Textbook titled ROLE OF THE GOVERNMENT IN HEALTH where I have started with the functions of state government in the field of health care right from the village/gram level. Here we have first seen how the health scenario in India is bright and gloomy at the same time with two very different statistics. The story of Halim Sheikh, Amar & Ranjan tells us that our health sector is not upto the mark when compared with the sort of availability in government hospitals and private hospitals. Government hospitals are crowded and it takes long time to treat ourselves there whereas private hospitals are too expensive. We have talked about how the medical facilities are provided only to male members of the family at many places and the problems of the females are ignored. The case of kerala government health sector has also been discussed. The costa rican approach to health has also been discussed.
